Department of Education and Research

This department is dedicated to environmental education, university education and scientific research in the fields of marine ecology, aquaculture and artisanal fishery.

During low tides, the rocky shore of Aguda presents an ideal area for environmental education and scientific research. Maximum tide variation ranges from 0.3 to 3.6 m. The coastline shows a characteristic zonation of invertebrates and seaweed, such as limpets and barnacles in the upper eulittoral, mussels in the middle eulittoral, “reefs” of the honeycomb worm in the lower eulitoral and colonies of kelp in the sublitoral fringe.

The beach of Aguda is characterized by artisanal fishing, housing a small fleet of Caíques, open boats of 7.5 m in length, equipped with powerful outboard motors.

At the fish market a wide range of species typical of the North Atlantic can be found, and the fishing gear and traditional arts can be observed directly on the beach.

To the north of Aguda beach a Dune Park is located, where the most characteristic plant species of the primary and secondary dune can be observed.
